Nice to meet you!
My name is Erik, short for Erik-Sjoerd. I’m a Dutch full-time solo explorer roaming this beautiful planet in a 2002 Land Rover Defender 110, and I’m the driving force (haha, pun intended) behind Have Fun And Go.
How it all started
Strangely enough, it all started with a motorcycle accident in the summer of 2016. The details of the incident remain a mystery to me due to the severe traumatic brain injury I sustained from my head smashing into the asphalt (but the few photos I have don’t lie). On top of that, I also shattered my collarbone, but according to medical professionals, that was the least of my worries, and I was fortunate not to be paralyzed for life.
After my recovery, I returned to my professional video marketing company, which I had owned for ten years. Business was good, and we were still growing and growing. But… the motorcycle crash really got me thinking, changing my perspective on life and my future direction.
So in the summer of 2018, one year after the accident, I couldn’t ignore the thoughts marching through my head any longer, and I drastically changed my plans. I wanted to do something else!
So, I did what any sane person would do – I sold everything and decided to go on a World Trip! I love to be outdoors, camping, traveling, and road-tripping. So I deep-dived into traveling the world by car. Some people thought I was running away from everything, that I didn’t recover from the accident or went insane, but they couldn’t be more wrong! This World Trip plan was well-thought-out. Oh, and yes, just a few months after my collarbone operation, I was right back on my motorcycle!
Overlanding
When I started researching everything about my upcoming world trip, I had yet to learn it was called Overlanding, which, in a nutshell, is best described as; traveling the world by car to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal, and the main form of lodging is camping, often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries. In short, freedom!
The next step is to determine a destination. I have had my eye on Asia for a long time. I traveled to many destinations, but Asia wasn’t one of them, so I aimed for that direction. It attracted me somehow, at least more than Africa or South America (for now). Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and India were places I definitely wanted to visit one day. And that day is now!
